Oral Healthcare Can't Wait

Dental Trade Alliance Launches “Oral Healthcare Can’t Wait™” Awareness Campaign

Dental Industry Unites to Warn Consumers About the Risks of
Putting Off Regular Checkups and Recommended Treatment

Arlington, VA – July 1st, 2009 – The Dental Trade Alliance (DTA), a nonprofit trade association representing leading dental manufacturers, distributors, and laboratories, recently launched its “Oral Healthcare Can’t Wait™” awareness campaign (http://www.oralhealthcarecantwait.com) in an effort to warn consumers about the risks of postponing regular dental checkups and recommended treatment. According to DTA chief executive officer Gary Price, “The current economic climate is causing many people to either postpone the treatment plans recommended by their dentists, or to put off dental visits altogether.”

The potential health risks of postponing oral healthcare treatment can be significant, with more and more published research supporting the existence of a strong link between optimum oral health and overall well-being – especially in the area of periodontal disease. “But it doesn’t have to be this way,” explains Price. “Although we face economic challenges on a national basis, the majority of Americans still have the ability to make continued and comprehensive oral care an integrated part of their lives.”

Therefore, the DTA is launching a multifaceted Oral Healthcare Can’t Wait awareness campaign to dental professionals and consumers alike. Lanmark Group, the dental industry’s leading advertising, marketing, and public relations agency, will be spearheading this effort by developing the overall strategy, creative concepts, and tactical execution on a pro bono basis. The following is just a partial outline of the campaign marketing components that Lanmark is currently providing:

Oral Healthcare Can’t Wait logo and slogan
Dedicated Oral Healthcare Can’t Wait website for dental professionals and consumers
Dental trade and consumer print and online advertising
Professional and consumer public relations program
Public service announcements
Patient education brochures and posters
Dental practice marketing tool kit to promote “Oral Healthcare Can’t Wait” campaign in local markets
Online video for distribution via YouTube, etc.

“Oral Healthcare Can’t Wait promises to be a very ambitious campaign, with the ultimate goal being to sustain and improve oral health in America,” explained Price. “I’m very grateful for the level of commitment and agency resources that Lanmark president Howard Klein has pledged to this campaign, as well as the support of our leading dental industry publications, such as Compendium, Dental Economics, Dental Product Report, Dental Product Shopper, Dentistry Today, Dental Tribune, DentalTown, Dimensions of Dental Hygiene, Inside Dentistry, and RDH Magazine. In addition, the leading dental distributors Benco Dental, Burkhart Dental Supply, Darby Dental Supply, Henry Schein, Iowa Dental Supply and Patterson Dental have pledged their support to help launch this important initiative. We will also be counting on the support of DTA members in other areas, such as funding for direct-to-consumer advertising in national newspapers, television, and radio, etc. If we work together, we can make a difference.” For more information regarding the Oral Healthcare Can’t Wait Campaign, visit http://www.oralhealthcarecantwait.com. To pledge support, contact Dental Trade Alliance CEO Gary Price at 703.379.7755.

New Way of Coating Implants Improves Osseointegration

A new method of applying the hydroxyapitite to metal prosthetics has been discovered by Professor Noam Eliaz of the TAU School of Mechanical Engineering. It involves an electrochemical process rather than spraying the surface coating on an implant. Prof. Eliaz is reporting a 33% decrease in failures of tested implants. Here’s the link – it’s much easier for you to read it than for me to attempt to explain it!

Should Endodontists Place Implants? A Survey of U.S. Endodontists
Karen S. Potter, DDS∗, Michelle R. McQuistan, DDS, MS†, Anne E. Williamson, DDS, MS
Abstract
Introduction

The purpose of this national study was to assess endodontists' opinions regarding whether endodontists should place dental implants.
Methods

A written survey was developed and mailed to 1505 randomly selected practicing endodontists within the United States.
Results

The response rate was 46%. Univariate, bivariate, and logistic regression analyses were performed. Fifty-seven percent of respondents supported endodontists placing implants. Currently 5.7% of respondents place implants. Regression analyses identified the following variables as being positively associated with endodontists placing implants: graduation from an endodontic training program ≥10 years ago (p = .002); interest in placing implants in the future (p = .0001); the belief that implant placement should be incorporated into the endodontic residency curriculum (p < .0001); the belief that general dentists would support endodontists placing implants (p < .0001); and the desire to continue the rapport with a referred patient by placing an implant if the patient's tooth is nonrestorable (p < .0001).

Conclusions

The majority of responding endodontists believed that dental implant placement is within the scope of endodontic practice. Governing bodies of the specialty of endodontics might consider discussing whether formal implant training should be incorporated into future curricula. [Link]

New Way To Whiten Teeth: Lozenge-Style

I have to admit – whitening my teeth is a pain. I’ve tried them all – chairside, home, toothpaste, strips – you name it, I’ve tried it and always wished there was an easier way. When I read about the NuvoraWhite over on Amy’s List I was pretty excited about it! I plan on getting my hands on some so I can give it a try. Basically it’s a lozenge that uses a patented sustained release technology to deliver carbamide peroxide, xylitol and a few other ingredients as it dissolves. I’ll let you know how it goes – if anyone has tried it, please let me know how it worked out for you.

Here’s some information from company’s site, NuvoraInc.com:

Lost Pictures on Flash Media Can Be Recovered

I recently had to recover some accidentally deleted pictures from an SD card in my daughters digital camera. I looked around the Internet looking from some freeware recovery software.

I came across this link to a Image Rescue 3 by Lexar. The link below allowed me to download their software for free by giving them an email address. The software located the deleted photos and I was able to recover them.

Crest launches new Complete 7 Expert toothpaste

I wonder if this is coming to the US?

Crest launches today its new Complete 7 Expert toothpaste which hardens the tooth enamel after 2 weeks.

Enamel is the hardest tissue in the human body due to its high mineral content. However, it is still susceptible to demineralization, a deterioration process which can lead to caries or cavities.

'Not everyone is familiar with enamel and its importance. Enamel is the frontline of protection for teeth and it is crucial to protect and prevent it from demineralising. The right toothpaste can help you to protect your enamel from wear and tear and preserve a bright, healthy and confident smile,'

said Mohammed Azzawe, Brand Manager, Oral Care AP.

Although being the hardest tissue in the human body, enamel can be broken down by several factors including applying too much pressure on the teeth during brushing, sugary foods leading to cavities and also acid erosion.

Acid erosion is a chemical process that occurs due to acids in foods particularly fruits and drinks. It can lead to demineralisation of the tooth enamel which can result in discoloration, sensitivity and expensive dental work such as veneers.

The new Crest Complete 7 Expert Enamel Protection is a specialised toothpaste for comprehensive enamel protection. It contains FluorisilTM, which is scientifically proven to enhance re-mineralisation and rebuild the enamel. FluorisilTM is a combination of fluoride and two types of silicas.

Fluoride is immediately available while brushing and becomes integrated into the enamel to rebuild and strengthen it, making it more resistant to acid attack. Silicas on the other hand deliver superb cleaning power and helps to remove enamel stains. This comprehensive toothpaste also contains the anti-tartar ingredient, Pyrophosphate, to prevent discoloration due to tartar and stain formation.

Crest Complete 7 Expert Enamel Protection is part of the new Complete 7 Expert range of specialized toothpastes which also includes Expert Gums Protection and Expert Sensitive. It is now available for purchase in all major retailers and pharmacies across the Arabian Peninsula. [Link]

Study Clubs Aren’t Just For Dentists

Study clubs for auxiliaries are becoming more common and I am thrilled every time I hear or read about a new one. At the last ADIA meeting I had the pleasure of meeting the team of Advanced Dental Care of Norton and their wonderful office manager Michelle Kratt. She emailed me to let me know about her new study club that she was inspired to start after attending the last American Association of Dental Office Managers meeting. Judy Kay Mausolf gave a wonderful lecture on how to start and lead a successful study club. Many study clubs were started after that meeting. A Facebook friend that attended ADIA’s hygiene meeting (also in Philly) just posted that she gave her first presentation for dentists – it went wonderfully! Do you see a trend here?

By attending more meetings and seeking out more education, your team members can become leaders. Laurie Sizemore – president of our local study club here in northern Virginia – gained inspiration in a similar manner. I started speaking in front of study clubs – you can’t beat a small crowd for the best interactive experience. For dentists that may consider team education and empowerment an unnecessary expense, please re-think this position. Your practice will improve and grow when you have dedicated, educated and smarter employees. Trust me on this.

Here’s Michelle leading her first study club meeting – congratulations!

Salivary pH level and bacterial plaque evaluation in orthodontic patients treated with Recaldent® products

O Marchisio, MR Esposito and A Genovesi
International Journal of Dental Hygiene

Published Online: 15 Jun 2009

Abstract: Dental caries and resulting tooth decay can produce a multifactorial destructive process with a very high incidence. Cariogenic bacteria attack enamel with acids that produce subsurface lesions, thereby weakening the enamel and allowing bacterial progression into the dentin. The formation of dental decay, because of demineralization of the tooth structure, can be prevented or delayed by increasing the rate of the tooth's remineralization and replacement relative to the tooth's rate of demineralization. This rebuilding of enamel may be accelerated by the addition of amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) with the aid of casein phosphopeptide (CPP) (Recaldent® molecule). In this study, the role of CPP in stabilizing and releasing ACP on the tooth surface has been investigated to better understand its efficacy in the prevention of tooth demineralization in orthodontic patients. Twenty-five patients who wore fixed orthodontic appliances were enrolled in this clinical trial. It was explained to the patients that CPP–ACP would be used for 3 weeks and then suspended for an additional 3 weeks. Salivary pH evaluation, plaque pH evaluation and oral hygiene index (OHI) were performed at T0, T1 and T2. Results showed an increase in OHI level and an increase of the salivary pH (76% of the patients). Instead of plaque pH level that showed trivial results, only 48% of the patients showed a bacterial plaque pH increase. In conclusion, this study has not provided unequivocal evidence for the protective properties of Recaldent® molecule. Long-term studies are necessary to better understand the role of this molecule.
